What is the usual time frame for embarkation?
Embarkation begins at approximately 12:30pm – 3:30pm on the day of departure.

When will I be able to disembark?
Disembarkation is based on the colour tag you are given for your luggage and depends on what cabin category you are in. The cruise line does take into consideration those passengers that have a flight directly after disembarkation.

Are cruises for older people?
The average age of cruise passengers is becoming younger all the time. Many ships now cater to a wide variety people of all ages and have onboard facilities to suit. For example many have children’s facilities, nightclubs for young adults (and the young at heart), onboard activities like rock climbing, in-line skating track etc. One ship, Freedom of the Seas, is to have an onboard surfing pool! Feedback from our customers suggest that regardless of whether you are in your 20’s, 50’s or 70’s, there is plenty to do and see, and everyone has lots of fun!

Will I get seasick?
As most of today's ships have stabilisers which steady the ship in rough seas. This makes for much smoother cruising.

When is it a good time to take a cruise at certain destinations?
You can cruise many destinations all year round while others have a 4-6 month optimum cruising period. Check out our Cruise Seasons page to view all the wonderful locations to cruise to, and the very best time to cruise them.

Is cruising expensive?
The cost of cruising naturally varies depending on the number of days, ship, destination and cabin type but prices can start from as little as $100 per day including all meals, luxurious transport and entertainment. With the increase in popularity of cruising, we've found that the actual cost of cruising has reduced, however it is not the overall cost of the cruise that is important, but more the value for money that cruising represents. Think of it as a floating resort holiday where the destinations come to you!

What do you wear at sea?
By day casual clothes are suitable. After 6pm, smart casual attire is required in the public lounges and dining rooms. Evenings tend to be more formal when dining. Men should pack a a jacket and tie for such occasions. On most cruises you will find that there are some formal nights and some casual. You can check this at the time of booking. Be mindful that you will need suitable clothing for shore excursions e.g. runners or walking shoes, sun hat.

What are the dining times on the ship?

  • First Dining is usually around 6pm
  • Second Dining is normally at 8pm

Entertainment and show follow each dining.

Many cruise lines including P&O Cruises and Princess Cruises are moving to “Personal Choice” or “Anytime” dining. This means you are permitted to eat anytime, with anyone, at any of the restaurants on board. However you are normally required to make a reservation ahead of time to ensure you get a table.

How can I check if the cabin or cruise that I want, is available?
You must first place a booking option with us. It is not until we place the booking with the cruise operator that we are advised availability of the cabin.

How do I pay for things I purchase onboard the ship?
You will receive a Cruise Card when you get onboard. Firstly it is a security pass for when go on and off the ship, but secondly, it acts as a charge card. There is a magnetic strip on each card which acts like a credit card. With all purchases on board, your cruise card is swiped and the amounts debited to your account. You can pay off parts or your entire cruise card as you go, or settle up the account before you leave ship.

How much baggage can I take on my cruise?
Each cruise line varies but generally you baggage should confirm to airline size requirements. The beauty of cruising is that you can unpack everything into your cabin. Remember that your baggage needs to be stowed in your cabin and space maybe limited depending on your cabin category. So softer bags that can be folded up and stored taking up less space are ideal.

Do I need to tip?
Tipping or gratuities are expected as they would be at many hotels or restaurants, but at the end of the day it is completely at your discretion. Some ships include gratuities within the price of the holiday. You can check that with us at time of booking.

How do I phone home whilst onboard?
You can use the satellite phone onboard your chosen ship. Beware that calls made from a satellite phone are very expensive. You can also fax, send postcards and letters and buy stamps. These are generally posted at the next port of call. Most ships have internet access too so you can use email.

I’ve heard there are theme nights aboard?
Is this correct? Yes, some cruise lines have theme nights to help people relax and get to know each other. Some common themes might be Country and Western, Retro Night, Island Night or Pyjama Party themes. Check with your Cruises Direct consultant as to whether theme nights are likely on your cruise.

What is a shore excursion?
Shore excursions are available at each port of call. These are escorted trips around your chosen itinerary. Tours can either be pre-booked or booked onboard the ship. It is recommended that you book in advance in order to avoid disappointment. Contact our reservations team for more details on 0800 WE CRUISE

When do the Duty-Free shops and Casino open?
They are open approximately 12 miles out from port or an hour and a half after sailing.

What do I need to pay for onboard?
Anything of a personal nature is at your own expense. This would include drinks, health and beauty and/or spa treatments, onboard shopping, casino or gambling games (like Bingo).
